Humans

Sinoscope #1

In a context of hyper digitalization and global distancing, giving back its humanity and putting humans at the heart of the Chinese society and culture is fundamental.

Through a selection of artists who explore humans’ body, mind and emotions in all their complexity, you will discover personal, societal and global issues that matter to Chinese’s youth nowadays.

Art performance and photography fields naturally illustrate this theme and even generate a lot of interest by creating a direct emotional connection with the audience.

Staging Humans

In Contemporary Chinese Culture, Performing Art is quite present in daily life. From Opera houses to the parks and even the streets, professionals or amateurs play music, sing opera and dance on pop music *(referring to the “guangchangwu” square dance in Hu Xiangqian’s video “The Woman in Front of the Camera”). Performance is also a very important medium used by contemporary artists since the rise of the art scene in China.

At the beginning of his career, a pioneer artist like Zhang Huan used his body to question the position of the individual within the society. From the younger generation, Ye Funa invites participants to do live performance online with her, meeting the needs of the youth to display and express oneself.

Beyond Tabous

As individuals, HUMANS exist through their bodies and feelings. Their gestures and emotions are at the center of Zhang Yunyao’s work, where classical bodies takes form through a long process of rubbing graphites or pastels on felt canvas’ surface. While Wang Keping, is inspired by the shape of the wood – its sensual lines, cracks, and bumps, that he uses to sculpt women’s bodies, Peng Wei uses paper and calligraphy to enhance them.

Despite tabous, the naked body is used as a medium in performing art as well as subject in photography to highlight issues such as genders, femininity, individuality in Chinese Society. With explicit nudity, Ren Hang’s photography has inspired a new generation of photographers, depicting the life of young people in their individuality and fragility without any judgement.

The People as a Body

HUMANS is also about the generations, the groups, the collectivity, how “we” live together. What is the place for individuality in Chinese contemporary society?

The youth is looking for some freedom in Chen Wei’s disco series; artists ecosystems defy expectations and stereotypes, like Chen Tianzhuo and the Asian Dope Boys’ contemporary rituals, nourished by subcultures.

The Me vs We, or individuality vs collectivity, is very well illustrated by Polit Sheer Form’s actions, an art collective consisting of five famous figures of contemporary art, that gathers to eat, drink, play, exercise, travel or bath all together to become a “We”.

The « Me & We » have to face incredible changes in nowadays society.

From the collective utopia of the « Chinese Dream » and the wonderlands of brands fantasies, utopian visions are also reflected in the quests for harmony, spirituality and the imagination of fantastic worlds. Today, the Chinese youth also have to face dystopian realities that echoes the concerns and the threats of a time, facing pandemic, societal and environmental issues. Dystopia and utopia, as Yin and Yang, can be seen as complementary in their duality, a vision specific to oriental philosophies and a wide source of creativity

To achieve and express their individuality, some embrace their future through the dream of technological innovation and the fantasy of gaming culture, some explore their heritage to question their identity, while others are trying to escape from the urban net in the quest for an answer from Nature

That’s what you will experience in the forthcoming editions of our “Sinoscope” through themes like « Digital Me » , « SuperNature », « Neo Heritage » or « Play Feel ».
